I know nothing about them!

I want to get the CB-1 up and running again. At one point a couple years ago I had it where it would start, but idle was sporadic and it would fall on it’s face above like 1/4 throttle/5k rpms. I’m thinking it was bad gas and maybe the carbs need to be cleaned out?

I was also browsing craigslist and by chance stumbled on someone nearby selling a Kerker exhaust system for the bike! It’s a rare bike so this is unusual, but I think I’m going to get it. These bikes run slightly on the lean side stock, and a pipe isn’t going to help that, so since I need to fiddle with the carbs I’m going to order a jet kit for it.

Any advice? Suggestions? Has anyone dealt with carbjetkits.com? They sell motorcycle jet kits and you can even put in information about your bike and they will suggest kits. Their recommendation for me was #38 pilot, #110 main, 2 shims on the needles. That seems to check with what I’ve read in some forums and such.

Here simply to say that I am jealous of the CB1. That is one of my attainable dream bikes.

It is going to be hard to get information from here without knowing what was stock and even then will be tough. If I recall, there was a good CB1 forum that may have some useful information if its still around. Dynojet is who I have always used and they are pretty good, also have a good tech line.

These videos are a great primer. This is last one in the series, I think there is 4 previous ones to watch before it  https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/inside-motorcycle-carburetor-needle-height-tuning-adjustment

I dunno but carbs are basically witchcraft. Also, once you get the bike running properly, DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING. A smidge of a turn on the wrong screw will totally bork the entire system.

I am no professional on carburetors but it sounds like the main jet is on a jammed side while the idle jet is a bit more clear . This might explain why it idles... and dies at throttle.

Find a buddy with a ultrasonic cleaner and dump the disassembled carb in there to cook for a while. Alternatively, you can find them and carb cleaner fluid on amazon. Not just a can... but a bucket

Also see Mustie1 on youtube. He might point you to a thing or two about carbs

get a dyno jet kit. Step 1 is get it running, leave stock exhaust on and pull the carbs. clean th em well, get er running. then worry about the re-jet.

It might be up for sale sooner or later.  But I want to get it running and ride it for a season or two first.

D esign carbs was rocket surgery, but c leaning them is not :

Take your time,

Work in a clean & well lit area ( as far away as possible from your living quarter since the smell of gas will haunt you otherwise ),

Wear nitrile gloves, see above.

Don’t use compressed air, it could blow through the diaphragm if it has one.

U se carb cleaner ( in spray to clean the orifices, in a bucket only if it’s really gooped up, and don’t spray carb cleaner in your eyes ),

D on’t force strange objects in these orifices (that’s what the doc told me),

Don’t spray carb cleaner in your eyes,

U se the jets recommended by the pros. Unless you live in Colorado or below see level.

Don’t spray carb cleaner in your eyes.

Invest in rebuild kits, with those cool little gaskets and diaphragms and o-rings.

Also, don’t spray carb cleaner in your eyes.
